  • Ida Grove's Midwest Industries, Inc. developed the hoist, a form of which is used on farms.
  • In 1959, Nikita Khruschev visited the Coon Rapids farm of Roswell Garst.
  • Elk Horn is the largest Danish settlement in the United States.
  • Christian K. Nelson from Monona County invented the Eskimo Pie, originally named the I-Scream bar, by combining a candy bar with an ice cream sandwich.
  • The county with the highest acreage of apple orchards is Harrison County.
  • The Loess Hills are located in Harrison and Monona Counties and are composed of yellow soil. Only in China can you find loess deposits that are anything similar.
