What
are the duties of your job?
As a State Representative, I represent nearly 30,000 people
in the Iowa House of Representatives. There are 100 State
Representatives and 50 State Senators in the Iowa General
Assembly. The Iowa House of Representatives and the Iowa
Senate pass laws for people that live in Iowa.
What
do you like best about your job?
Since I am elected by the people I represent, I believe
that it is an honor for me to serve in the House of Representatives.
Representing the people that elected me to the Legislature
and trying to help the people of Iowa is very rewarding
to me, personally. Helping the people of Iowa reach their
dreams and goals is very gratifying.
What
is the toughest part of your job?
Since the Legislature is made up of citizens who also have
other jobs, trying to manage my time between my duties as
a State Representative, farmer, father of two children,
the husband of a terrific wife, among other things, is the
most difficult part of my job.
What
type of training is required for your job?
I graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in
Agricultural Business. The education that I received while
attending Iowa State University has helped me in both my
farming operation, as well as my job as State Representative.
I believe that a good education is necessary for everyone
who lives in Iowa.
How
is your job related to agriculture?
Many of the laws that we pass have a direct effect, or impact,
on the farmers of Iowa. We try to pass laws that make it
easier for farmers to do their job and to be successful.
Sometimes the people that live in Iowa who do not farm want
laws passed that may not help farmers do their job. This
is when our job becomes very challenging.
